  • Clearswift: Extensive usage of ‘Computers’ opens new business data leakage risks

    2007/04/05 17:02:50 BST

I’ve written before about the word replacement game, and the power it has to defang even the most tediously trite and blatantly fearmongering stories which sometimes burst forth in the media, exposing them for the plonking warmed-over and obvious drivel that they are. Here’s the latest news, from Clearswift, mildly edited by myself. The methodology

  • Matthew Yeomans says having your CEO blogging is ‘a terrible idea’

    2007/04/04 22:21:28 BST

Dave IM’ed me earlier today, telling me to get an earful of what he’s heard on the BBC Radio 4 Today Programme at some obscene hour of the morning. It’s available for RealAudio playback (start at the 23:45 mark) and Matthew Yeomans Director of Custom Communication tells us many things about why companies need to

  • Breakaway Vermont

    2007/04/04 16:51:56 BST

From Fark: Item: Vermont citizens contemplating seccession due to an overly controlling federal government. If only they could find some other states with similar issues, and form an organization. A Confederacy, if you will. (link) Comment: Independent Vermont can join with independent Quebec to form the Syrupean Union. via Bart.

    2007/04/04 15:55:13 BST

BBC News “Talking” CCTV cameras that tell off people dropping litter or committing anti-social behaviour are to be extended to 20 areas across England. They are already used in Middlesbrough where people seen misbehaving can be told to stop via a loudspeaker, controlled by control centre staff. About £500,000 will be spent adding speaker facilities

  • Shorter version of the Trike video…

    2007/04/02 22:57:01 BST

Click To Play After my reasonably successful trike video I bounced it off the recumbent blog and Alan Barnard got back to me saying that a shorter version might be more palatable to the blogging public at large. So here is is, at 4m07s. 🙂

  • What’s it like to Ride on a Recumbent Trike?

    2007/03/29 15:34:37 BST

So it was a nice evening last night, and inspired by Chris Gerhard’s recent video effort I decided to hand-hold my Canon IXUS 900ti and see how far I could get homewards before I filled my 2Gb SD card. All the way through the woods, and over the tank range, in turned out. As an

  • How Windows Vista could boost the porn industry and save HDTV

    2007/03/28 14:23:49 BST

Once a month I get together with my colleagues for an ad-hoc chat and lunch about anything and everything that takes our fancy; I love these occasions not just because of the geek content we discuss but also because of the observations and gossip that they bring. A few weeks ago, the conversation went a

  • Sun Security Community Opens Up Blog

    2007/03/27 18:07:13 BST

In case you missed it, me and some other folk in the Sun security community are trying something a little bit different. Security has always been a problematic topic for a corporation to discuss, except in the narrow sense of products that do some small security thing. You know what I mean – virus scanning,

  • How Flickr Just Screwed Up And How To Cope With It

    2007/03/21 09:04:31 GMT

Flickr user? Old Skool Flickr user who’s been with them for a long time? This morning, then, you’ll probably have been faced with a big glaring ugly splash screen like this: The people at Flickr probably have heard this, but in case not: boys, that’s a big oops. It’s bossy, ugly, and offers no value

  • My Feeds And Who Reads Them

    2007/03/20 14:24:57 GMT

Further to my thoughts about how to measure the growth of your readership, I hacked up a bit of perl which went sniffing for instances of %d reader(s) or %d subscriber(s) amongst my Apache logs, and boiled down the results. /dropsafe/index.rss 46 readers via Feedfetcher-Google /dropsafe/index.rss 38 readers via Bloglines/3.1 /dropsafe/index.rss 8 readers via NewsGatorOnline/2.0

    2007/03/20 09:46:29 GMT

Cathy Seipp – a blogger and writer – is gravely ill in hospital and will soon die of complications of cancer; she may have died overnight. Yet when I was seeking for an update I found some twit has registered cathyseipp dot com – I’m not hyperlinking to it, type it into the browser bar
