• “Eel Ploot” – It Rains

    It’s bucketing down outside – the drains in Fleet have lifted their covers, and the roads are up to 5″ deep at the verges. My back patio was 2″ deep when I left, so it’s not impossible I will return to a damp kitchen; at least this would be a novelty compared to some of

  • The Gate is Down

    In Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion he mentions – in passing – something about “North Hemisphere-centrism”. So it was fitting to have read that book the flight to Sydney; and it just made me realise: we really need for someone to make one of these “south-side up” maps and caption it (for those familiar with

  • The Trend of the Month…

    …is the old die-hard bloggers finally realising that their blogs need an overhaul of look and feel, possibly not to mention method and purpose. Really. Watch this space, or go check out Twitter feeds for Hugh and Winer, although of course as usual they are slightly behind the curve for reasons that will become apparent

  • Maemo Memo: Configure Stowaway Sierra “Fn” Key

    This works: mlindholm: My Stowaway Sierra keyboard arrived today, and in my poking around (and reading other suggestions) I think I found a hack that fixes the “Fn” menu issue. Edit the file /usr/share/X11/xkb/keycodes/xfree86 , and comment out the line: <MENU> = 117; so it reads //<MENU> = 117;

  • Social Media applied to The Big Internal Corporate Conference?

    So I got into a debate with a bunch of my colleagues about an idea I had – that an internal conference we hold every year would be greatly improved if some, perhaps the majority of the presentations were pre-recorded and posted to a corporate-internal YouTube-alike media server. The conference could still go ahead, be

  • Peppermints? Obviously a threat…

    I heard about this the first time round, but this marvelous quote escaped me: The officer asked for identification. The professor asked for his, after which Officer Leonpacher told him he was under arrest and, the professor claims, kicked his legs from under him, pinned him to the ground and confiscated his box of peppermints.

  • The Deep Truth Of IT Security

    Adriana pointed me to a short post on Euan Semple’s blog which has led to quite an amusing bunfight: A thought on IT security …. there’s not enough granularity in their paranoia. … Security is a tradeoff. Security professionals get it wrong by not considering the business case. Users get it wrong by asking for
