The Gate is Down

In Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion he mentions – in passing – something about “North Hemisphere-centrism”.

So it was fitting to have read that book the flight to Sydney; and it just made me realise: we really need for someone to make one of these “south-side up” maps and caption it (for those familiar with Ender’s Game) “The Gate is Down“.

Hmm.. I wonder how I mis-read “North Hemisphere-centrism” as “North Hampshire-centrism.” It’s probably just as valid in some circles. 🙂

  2. Seeing as bart (the author) is from Belgium, I don’t think so – although he is a regular visitor to Chez Muffett 🙂

  4. One of my favorite moments in the series “West Wing” was the episode in which C.J. meets with a group that wants to replace the maps in schools with a upside down Peters projection maps. When she sees the
map, she asks what it is. They reply “it’s where you live”. When she is told that it flips north and south, she tells them that they can’t do that because “it’s creeping me out”.
