  • Major vulnerability in FireFox on Windows (more?)

    2007/07/27 23:35:27 BST

If you use Firefox, especially on windows, read this! If you fail to take protective measures you could stumble across a webpage which toasts your system. Geoff wrote me: Not sure about Linux and OS X – assume the worst. See http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/783400 For now, consider using another browser. But if you have to use FireFox…

  • Solaris Trusted Extensions Thought for the Day

    2007/07/26 08:47:12 BST

Thought for the day: Is there any benefit to installing Trusted Extensions on Solaris 10+ and then *not* installing any zones/compartments on it? Would it work? If it did work, would any aspect of it be beneficial to operation? Think carefully before responding. This is, after all, how RBAC ended up in Solaris.

  • Oxford flooding

    2007/07/26 07:22:04 BST

Geoff passed on to me an Oxford status update from his brother, dated Wednesday morning: I have just heard that Botley Rd is passable at the moment but won’t be for long. A big surge is predicted for today as the the river drains the floodplains and water-meadows further up the Thames Valley. Kidlington, despite

  • The beams in the roof of New College, Oxford

    2007/07/23 21:58:05 BST

Three people in my life have to date quoted a nice story at me, with various endings – the ecomentalist: http://www.boingboing.net/2001/12/08/index.html After the giant oak beams in the New College’s great hall rotted out, the Dons of the college were at a loss to source replacement oak timbers of sufficient size. The college forrester came

The Independent front page. Flickr. Pictures from the BBC – New Road Cricket Ground being flooded out is not unusual, local legend has it of a match where one wicket-keeper was bitten by a Pike – but Holt Heath is high ground, unfortunately on clay, so that’s probably why it’s flooded. I know people who

  • Upside down

    2007/07/23 01:24:03 BST

On the road from Canberra’s city centre to the office there’s a fair bit of construction going on — new appartment blocks being constructed or existing ones being improved — and at one of the sites there’s a big sign next to the pavement that reads “Pedestrians watch out for trucks”. Well, no. If a

…and it’s a good tale, better than the last couple of books where Harry has been just plain whiney. I’m somewhere between wistful and glad that it’s over, or rather that it has been brought to a proper conclusion – and, perhaps unsurprisingly for a book which deals so much with themes of life and
