  • A Selection of 78 RPM Records – Part 1

    2012/07/22 07:44:36 BST

Via complicated means (read: having them dumped on me) I’ve obtained a big chunk of my parents’ 78RPM records, some of which doubtless go back to their parents, and some of which are even stranger, higher RPM, possibly shellac and with spirals which go from inside to out. The Pathe discs demand a “sapphire stylus”

    2012/07/21 19:36:17 BST

This is one of those videos where you realise a connection between science and humanity; it’s very simple: there’s a big window on the ISS now – in a whole bunch of ways it doesn’t need to be there, but it is there because we are human and ought to look at ourselves. Carl would

    2012/07/20 12:24:53 BST

Wow. See also. Some schools in England have opted out of the HPV vaccination programme because their pupils "follow strict Christian principles" and "do not practise sex outside marriage". The jab guards against two strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) virus – 16 and 18 – which cause 70% of cases of cervical cancer. It

  • BBC accused of broadcasting

    2012/07/20 12:07:54 BST

THE BBC is under fire for putting famous, expensive people on television, almost like a broadcaster. For whatever reason, people like him Jeremy Clarkson, who earns the BBC millions for a show in which he makes a small man crash cars, is controversially given a share of those millions almost as if he were working

    2012/07/20 11:40:32 BST

I think that the short version is: 1) we do things differently nowadays 2) the assumption that just because you’re plugged into a device you’re being antisocial is both narrow and wrong 3) just because it’s new doesn’t mean that it’s better or more honest; instead it’s different, and with that difference comes new and

  • A dialogue on sending users their passwords in clear text in e-mails, includes the fabulous line:

Actually, the hosting password and server passwords are stored using the CC Encryption Hash. They are reversible but not stored plain text. A hash is not reversible. Ask any potato. Password security.
