  • “In other words, I think we’re trying to fix social media in part because it’s too hard and too scary to fix our political system” – “Fixing disinformation won’t save us” by @EthanZ

Epic, heavily contextual essay on Disinformation, demonstrating that it is not a new problem and that it is necessary to address it socially, rather than just blame technology: It’s worth noting that it’s not an internet question so much as it is a media and education question. There was a horrific wave of disinformation that led to

As a dedicated Trekkie* I have known about this for a looooong time, and I am just hoping that in the datum universe it is Picard’s analysis which (one way or the other) wins out, rather than Data’s “terrorism works” one. Interesting timeline, though. In the UK the episode was censored to remove the scene.

  • What would your advice be, if you were going to set up a blog to host a civil-society non-techie activist campaign and were worried that [a small totalitarian dictatorship] was going to attack, DDOS, and try to kill it?

    2021/01/19 21:17:03 GMT

Occasionally I get posed questions like the above, and I want to coalesce my thinking. Exactly as the above, you have a small campaign of people who are dedicated but who are scared of user-interfaces and configuration panels. You have a message you want to “get out”. So there’s this piece in CircleID by Anthony Rutkowski Until the mid-90s, the development and deployment of cryptographic communication techniques was largely the province of governments and regulated network service providers, and small numbers of companies and academics that supported both. This comparative stasis changed dramatically — especially in the U.S. — twenty-five years ago
