New Zealand smoking ban: Health experts criticise new government’s shock reversal | I was not aware that NZ had dropped the rolling smoking ban. The UK currently persists.
For some reason this reminds me of Australia surprisingly backing down on some oppressive tech legislation and letting the UK go first. Can’t think why. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-67540190 Previously: https://digitalrightswatch.org.au/2023/08/31/campaign-win-against-age-verification/

Inhaled isopropyl alcohol for nausea & vomiting in the emergency department
Something I learned from TikTok & which I have done considerable recent testing: dry retching antibiotics & infection. Isopropyl alcohol. This works for me. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6189884/#:~:text=Inhaled%20isopropyl%20alcohol%20provides%20a,continued%20short%2Dlasting%20nausea%20relief.

The Swedes have a concept-word “lagom”, and the game theorist in me has questions
Lagom means “just enough” and the canonical example is that is the amount of booze you drink from a shared cup to assure that everybody gets some. So I’m wondering what the word is for taking as much as you can without being thought greedy?

Nobody tells you that the MTRR to recover from a toddler-induced outage exceeds the mean time between outages
Toddler has been going through $SOMETHING recently – probably teething, maybe an earache, definitely a bit of a chesty cough, definitely farty gas – and last night I crashed in her room (we both do this, on a shift rota) and there was incessant toddler discomfort leading to the small squawking child, well, squawking. I…

Should privacy be a superpower for the techno-elite?
There are few better ways to stoke a class-warfare debate in the UK than to either (a) point-out or (b) question whether something is “elitist” — private schooling, private healthcare, private housing, even private transport — and now in the post-OnlineSafetyBill world there’s a new one: private privacy. Bluntly: I have a daughter, and the…

Q: “Where are the universities in the Fediverse?” A: “I suspect that they are wisely avoiding getting into content-moderation arguments…” (HT: @radlschorsch@muenchen.social)
There’s an understandably optimistic posting on Mastodon today: Where are the universities in the Fediverse? Why don’t universities have their own Mastodon instances yet?Why don’t students get a Mastodon handle when they enrol? Why don’t universities host lecture videos on PeerTube in the Fediverse? There is a lot to be said for universities getting more involved in the…

Does mass media pave the way to fascism? | Wellcome Collection | Betteridge’s Law, Applies
There’s a TikToker who recently coined the most-ever pithy summary of Darwin’s Origin of Species: I figured out why there’s animals: it’s because you can’t fuck if you’re dead* In a similar vein there should be a summary of Fascism along the lines of: If you want massed rallies of zombie-like followers, try “mass communication”…

One of the things I really enjoy about being a FTSAHD
It’s entirely legit to have “make hot chocolate” as a project goal.

STUFF TO READ: How to sum up 1700 pages in four words | @webdevlaw on the purposefully intimidating Ofcom “Online Safety” consultation, and where we’ve seen similar before
Sounds familiar: And let’s be clear: it took months for the EC to even consider that they’d made a mistake. Before they did that, they threw in a lot of attacks against the campaigners, the advocates, and anyone who had a problem with a law meant to “rein in the tech giants” but which slapped…
