  • Economics has the “Lump of Labour Fallacy”; tech needs the “Lump of Social Community” fallacy

    2023/11/12 08:29:46 GMT

    Apparently Bluesky is dead.  It’s not, of course, but Anil Dash using Threads points at some apocalyptic “Bluesky would have won if it hadn’t been for you pesky Meta engineers”-type arguments which are trying to establish themselves. Anil is even making wild claims of monopoly being exerted. This is all (a) premature and (b) groundless;

    2023/11/11 12:19:29 GMT

    Maybe Alexander is right… but then there is the question of by what right he can tell a destination website that they must not deploy (e.g.) Meta or Google tracking pixels. Or that – passim his not being able to achieve that – how the likes of Google or Meta could ever explicitly honour not

  • Miele Dishwasher Hack

    2023/11/11 08:13:47 GMT

    If you have a Miele dishwasher – we have an AutoDos model – there are a variety of programs including Quick Power Wash which gives you a 1h program running at 65C. Just to see what happens I pushed the Express option for Quick Power Wash, and the timer dropped to 13 minutes. It appears

  • “Through NATO, we can build a secure cyberspace for all” | no, no, sorry Jens, no we can’t.

    2023/11/10 07:07:36 GMT

    “Building a secure cyberspace” is isomorphic to “build a world where all homes are { burglar, fire, flood, storm, earthquake }-proof, where people are all polite & law-abiding.” And: just like 1950s fantasy-idealism, it would be dystopic. “Cyber” is speech of the people, not a state-managed fantasy domain.

  • “I’ll keep the free-usage tier with targeted advertising, please.”

    2023/11/09 20:28:28 GMT

    I think it was Dare Obasanjo who observed that, for the most part, any people who still use Facebook are likely not people who will storm off in a huff about being shown “targeted advertising”. By now, they are likely inured, and (frankly) compared to the option of shelling-out (edit) £150 per year (i.e. 1.5x

  • Diary for Today

    2023/11/08 20:17:15 GMT

    Another toddler-centric day, after a medium-rough night (4 out of 10 on a scale of roughness) dealing with an occasionally squawking kid who passed out in a nest of blankets rather than be put to bed properly. Since wakeup it’s basically been a “duvet day” for the kid because the weather has been vile, and
