Astronomy Measurement Rules Of Thumb

  • The angular diameter of the moon or sun is approximately half a degree.
  • The width of your palm, at full arm’s length, is approximately 5 degrees.
  • The two front stars of the Big Dipper in Ursa Major, are approximately 5 degrees separated.

Anybody got any more?

Given the horizon is 0 degrees, the zenith is 90, and halfway up is 45, I’ve not really needed more than these, but would love to hear a few more…
