Internet UPC Database?

On a whim I punched the number 0000496000001 into Google, to search for other references to Essex MUD; I found one which I’d already seen at [ask.slashdot.org] but what Google came up with as a response:

Look up UPC number 0 000496 00000 1
[www.upcdatabase.com]

…surprised me. I didn’t know there was a database of those things. Before coffee, I’m not sure what such a database would be useful (to the general public) for.

Any ideas?

If you speak German then an even better resource is http http://www.codecheck.ch which not only looks up barcodes but also gives photos. I checked it with the packet of M&M’s on my desk and it worked – http http://www.codecheck.ch/suesswaren_snacks/biskuits/P000159023283/index_html

  2. It’s useful for anyone who cannot see well. As a blind person I love google (and the upc database) every time I want to identify a can and have nobody to read me the label. Many people see, but not well enough to read small print.
