A thought that has struck me after far too long…
…were I ever to breed, and have a son, I suppose I should have to name him Robert Thomas Francis…

SHA-1 and the Great Cosmic Cryptographic “Off-Switch”
In a slightly perverse way I almost enjoy watching the media reporting and reading the third-party pseudery blogging of people who’ve read [www.schneier.com] – it seems a year cannot now go by without someone saying that “MD5 is dead”, “SHA-1 is dead”, “RSA is dead” … stating some degree of academic justification that is rapidly

Prius Hybrid Lunacy?
If the Toyota Prius will only make somewhere between 45 and 50 Miles Per (American) Gallon: US Gallon = 8 x 16 = 128 fl.oz. UK Gallon = 8 * 20 = 160 fl.oz Factor = 1.25 1.25 x 45 MPG(US) = 56 MPG(UK) …so if it makes 56 MPG in UK terms[1], why on

Erdos Amusement
So I was reading Hal’s blog about Erdos Numbers and my friend Whit: [blogs.sun.com] The “main tent” of the analyst’s conference ends with the CTO panel, featuring the person changed with setting technical direction and often architecture for each of Sun’s business units. This year’s herd of nerds included Jim Baty, Andy Bechtolsheim, Tim Bray,

Are there any NetBSD disk experts out there?
I am installing NetBSD onto a Toshiba Libretto 100ct with varying degrees of success; the operating sstem is wonderful, well-integrated (hey, I can drive my wireless card with “ifconfig”!) but seems to be having a slight hissy-fit regarding hard disk partitions. To cut a long story short: I am installing the hard disk on another

Serial burglar caught on webcam
This is lovely; the pictures are superb… [news.bbc.co.uk] A house burglar was caught after a webcam on the owner’s computer recorded images of him carrying out the raid. Stills of serial raider Benjamin Park, 19, of Cambridge, were sent to an email address so even when he stole the computer, the images could be found.

www.amateurtransplants.com
Parental Discretion Advisory – I am not joking, some of this stuff would explode the heads of some sweet, innocent Americans that I know. Ever since I heard a copy of London Underground I have been wondering who did it: [www.amateurtransplants.com] Fitness to Practice is an unsettling new CD written and performed by Amateur Transplants

Quad-Booting Thinkpad !
Another of the aphorisms by which I try to live my life is: try to have a different set of tools from everybody else; you need to have a “core set” that is the same as everyone else’s, but electing to suffer difference for its own sake does lead one away from monoculture syndrome –

US info-sharing initiative called a flop
Please share your security problems with the Government … I am rather surprised that anyone would ever think this might work. [www.theregister.co.uk] US info-sharing initiative called a flop Nearly a year after its launch, a federal office created as a conduit for corporate America to provide the government with sensitive information about critical vulnerabilities has
