  • Protonmail (groundlessly?) accusing Google of spying on people’s device content for CSAM

    2023/10/19 22:43:03 BST

For clarity, Protonmail are SPECULATIVELY accusing Google of doing something that is even worse than the CSAM detection proposal which Apple was forced to walk away from. I don’t think that Google are that stupid. I am confident that Protonmail are wrong. I will be amazed if I am incorrect in this analysis, at least

    2023/10/19 17:28:56 BST

To certain people this is catnip: that all digital content created by AIs can be fingerprinted for later identification. The truth is that reliance on a technology like this will either lead to making the technology obligatory (and therefore authoritarian) or we will return to a world of “only the bad guys have access to

    2023/10/19 16:13:59 BST

I did not know these things existed before having the double glazing redone last year, but I saw one in use and immediately saw the utility. Making tidy removal of sections of skirting board, cutting slots into countersunk wood screws that have had their slot reamed out, freehand cutting double thickness cardboard to make a

  • Our neighbours recently had scaffolding put up: workers evicted pigeons from nesting overnight under the solar panels, and wire mesh was installed to prevent them getting underneath again

    2023/10/19 15:03:37 BST

It’s now a week later and the pigeons are forlornly perching in the rain on the panel edging, huddled together like surly teenagers at a wet bus stop in the 1980s. I would take a photo but it would be weird.

    2023/10/19 12:43:31 BST

I read this and I honestly wonder whether it isn’t actually at least 50% a front for getting all of the really interesting technology vetted – and possibly classified – by security services: https://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/news/five-eyes-deep-tech-startups/ If you don’t believe that that is actually a thing, checkout this thread by Matt Green: So this season’s plot of

It’s so refreshing to have somebody representing the positive benefits of privacy and good security architecture who is actually listened to rather than just dismissed as a hairy libertarian geek. https://restofworld.org/2023/signal-president-meredith-whittaker-messaing-privacy/

    2023/10/19 08:18:24 BST

I think this is fabulously geeky. I also think that various privacy and anti-AI activists are going to have a conniption fit at the potential for homebrew ANPR solutions and concomitant data protection panic when they realise what will happen with people embracing technology like this at home in uncontrolled environments. As ever: the battle
