Nick Clegg Q&A on #CCDP | starts well but rapidly goes to pot #libdems #snooperscharter /ht @markpack

Incidentally Nick – in case you see this – the referred World at One interview was so contentious that someone transcribed it:

NC: …exactly, exactly. What we, what we were against in opposition was the creation of a Government data base which had a real sort of Orwellian air about it. What these proposals are all about is essentially this…

[…]

NC: …what I can’t do, what I can’t do on a lunchtime radio programme is tell you what those are in detail because the proposals haven’t been published yet. I am absolutely clear as Deputy Prime Minister and someone who cares passionately about civil liberties as the Leader of the Liberal Democrats that we will not return to the bad old days under the Labour Party. This will be an open, consultative and properly scrutinised process.

In a single interview swinging from it was a bad idea when the opposition suggested it to it’s an open, consultative and scrutinised process now.

For a bill that was originally going to be introduced in a Queen’s Speech without consultation or scrutiny.

Maybe you’re sorry?

He might not be yet, but if he doesn’t take a stance against it, he may come to be well be, later.

One of the many odd things about politics, is the regular failure to realise that the virtue of an idea, is typically not a function of the person or party suggesting it. Nor does political diktat tend to be effective at changing matters of physics or engineering; politically-facilitated funding may aid progress, but there’s still reality to deal with…
