watching the passage of the year, in real time…

I keep a small number of metrics – touchstones – that help me keep track of my progress through the year.

Amongst the impending-post-summer ones, are:

  1. Outbreak of crops of small funghi in the surrounding woodland and in my garden – last two weeks.

  2. Staying up late enough to see Aldebaran rising, and the Pleiades – Cropredy Folk Festival at some obscene and boozy hour.

  3. Being blinded by the glare of the setting sun, as I drive home – drive home last night.

  4. Ducks and geese flying in evident formation – drive home tonight.

– yep… summer’s on the way out.

Time to get on the motorbike and enjoy it whilst I can.

It’s also less than a month ’til equinox and that means that i’d better start thinking about getting out the lights for my bike.

Still, with the weather being as autumnal as it has been, will we notice the difference?
