A Selection of 78 RPM Records – Part 1

Via complicated means (read: having them dumped on me) I’ve obtained a big chunk of my parents’ 78RPM records, some of which doubtless go back to their parents, and some of which are even stranger, higher RPM, possibly shellac and with spirals which go from inside to out.

The Pathe discs demand a “sapphire stylus” even.

I’ve decided to photograph them prior to disposal via some economic or beneficial means; I reason that it’s good to get them sorted out anyway, plus I ought to get sleeves for the ones that lack them.

Photos going up on Flickr – this is the first of three or maybe four batches of this size.

There are a handful of breakages/cracked ones but I’ll photograph them too; also there’s an OpenRightsGroup slant on some of the pictures; I’ll highlight them in later postings.

View them below, view the set, or dive into the slideshow. Some of the earlier photos are less-good, it took me a while to work out a system.

Wow. Those which pre-date the standard of a single groove starting at the outside and going in, may be of historical significance in terms of illustrating the development of audio recordings.

I’m minded of the BBC Archives; they have players maintained and working, for everything from wax cylinders on up. I’d be very surprised if they wouldn’t be interested in some of these, and for some of the more esoterically recorded ones, it might be the only means of getting them played and ported to a more accessible medium.

I have some BBC contacts who might be able ot put you in touch with the right people – although I suspect you’re not short of them, yourself :-).

    1. If you know people, point them at the big blog post, I’ll be photographing the rest over the next week or so.

Also on the ORG front, if you are inclined to get the recordings digitised, I’d expect many of them will be well out of copyright by now – any thoughts on copylefting them? I would imagine there’s many a silly video on Youtube etc which would benefit from a knowinly-humourous brass or banjo soundtrack ;-).
