Vote on Potential Cat Names?

Hypothetically, if I were to get (say) three more cats at some point in the future[1] – what’s the best naming taxonomy?

  1. lolcat: om, nom, & nom-nom
  2. networking: 5, 5e & 6 (yes I have had 4 cats to date)
  3. unix: str, z, & into

Votes?

[1] Purely hypothetical; I currently have an elderly one which produces enough poop for three

  1. Not 1; it’ll date rapidly.

  2. *lol* cute names, but perhaps too similar to each other that the 3 cats would not have any idea who you were talking to (as if they cared). There’s also the PacMan nicknames, but would require 4 cats: Inky, Pinky, Blinky and Clyde 🙂

    speaking of similar… 🙂

    I vote for “cat(1)”

Well, you do count from 0 don’t you, so these will be cat[4], cat[5] and cat[6], or giving their indices as phonetic equivalents of the roman numerals:

    Ivy, Vee and Vie.

Why would you want to date 4 cats?

  6. Well, based on your note, there is another option:

    poop 1, poop 2 & poop 3. 😛

  7. “uniq, tar, grep, awk, sed” seem to lend themselves more to names.

  8. auto, extern, and register

Ooh! Kitteh-naming is fun. I vote lolnames. They may date but so what? Will be a kyoot reminder of a time gone by… Nom-nom is good but how about these (amongst my favourites) for alternatives?

Once a cat or cats moves in on you, I think you figure out their names just by living with them for a few days. You cannot pre-name a cat you have not met. Where possible, cat names (and for that matter, dog and child names) should be suitable for yelling out the back door on a wet night without alarming the neighbours unduly. Current cats: Mungo, named for Mungo Park the 19th century explorer who was the first European to see the source of the Niger; and Percy, named for Sir Percival (we thought he was brave, he is in fact a complete idiot who hasn’t connected cause and effect).

  11. What’s wrong with binary ?

    Hey 100, leave 101 alone!

  12. I think Melodie makes a good point, and the Ethernet-associated names, when they started in UserFriendly, were funny. Still, I think feline-associated deities of ancient civilisations, deserve a look-in, too. If you’re looking for up to 4 new cats, I’m sure there’ll be a Bastet among them.

  13. Clergy friends of mine had a pair of cats called “Tess” and “Tickle”! Think about it… what other words could be ‘played with’ in a similar way?

For Melodie – I shout Pythagoras up and down the street. I’m not embarrassed!

I would suggest names but I think that naming the last one Pythagoras probably should bar me from further input on names!
