McAfee false-positive glitch fells PCs worldwide

McAfee false-positive glitch fells PCs worldwide • The Register

IT admins across the globe are letting out a collective groan after servers and PCs running McAfee VirusScan were brought down when the anti-virus program attacked their core system files. In some cases, this caused the machines to display the dreaded blue screen of death.

This pains me, it almost physically pains me. Systems today should not have to rely on a solitary immune system (and this, and immunological defence gone mad) in order to be secure.

Enterprises — and developers — need to be educated that computing doesn’t have to be this way.

Sheesh.

GAROS.

  1. Sorry if I have completely missed the point but how would several layers of protection helped in this case? Even with several layers the system files would have been deleted?

    1. How many platforms do you use which do *not* require bolt-on antivirus, what are they and how do they approach security?

(edit: and for bonus marks, how are they usually best deployed? 🙂 )
