BBC NEWS – When is a demo not a demo?

BBC NEWS | Magazine | When is a demo not a demo?

When is a demonstration not a demonstration? That effectively is the intriguing question that the most senior judges in the country will have to decide next week, writes the BBC’s Clive Coleman.

The case centres on the Critical Mass Cycle ride, a mass bike ride around the streets of London held on the last Friday of each month. The ruling could prove highly significant to many others wanting to hold marches and processions.

I shall be listening to the radio programme with great interest…

  1. Ever since they started claiming CM was a demo I’ve wondered about my weekly bike rides with my mates.

We have no preplanned route, we have no leader all we do is meet at a certain place and time each week. I’m not sure how this is different from CM except we are not in the city and there are not as many of us.

However I know of plenty of groups of cyclists who ride in numbers that are at least in the order of CM.

  2. I’m watching this with interest as I’m a marshal for a weekly street skate through the streets of London (londonskate.com). I always though that Critical Mass was a demonstration myself! LOL
