McNaught Now Brightest Comet in Decades

Today’s APOD:-

The brightest comet in decades is unexpectedly now visible. The most optimistic predictions have Comet McNaught (C/2006 P1) shortly becoming one of the brightest comets of the past century. For the next few days, its short tail and bright coma can be spotted with the unaided eye close to the Sun and near the horizon in both evening and morning skies.

Well that’ll be my sleep pattern, buggered.

Hmm.. if the British weather has anything to do with it we’re not going to see it at all. :-/

I was going to ask where would be best to see it from locally, as it would be good for Chris to see, but Steve has a rather valid point!

What a time for Melbourne to be blanketed in bushfire smoke. 🙁

Well, Grum, Christopher and myself took the opportunity of yesterday’s good weather to try to see the spectacle for ourselves yesterday on Blackbush airport. Unfortunately, this being the first opportunity to look at the sunset and dusky sky was at least one day too late to see the darn thing from the UK.

    Typical, eh?

Still we did see a kestrel hunting and got pictures of it (if you zoom into the frame enough to make out the speck on the image).
