Replacement cables for an older bicycle?

I have a “shite old bike” (TM) which is defined by it’s characteristic of being a bit grubby and naff, and therefore likely to still be at the railway station when I get home in the evening.

Specifically it’s a 21-speed 1992 Raleigh Amazon bicycle with cheap-ass Shimano 100GS shifters/cables, and Shimano BL-200 centre-pull brakes.

It’s due a few nights’ worth of overhaulage for its continued function – the only serious problem is that the cables are frankly shot, and although they still function they will not do so for much longer.

Also – several years ago – my colleague Simon gave me a spare set of ally MTB rims which might (ha!) be nicer than the stock items; however swapping those are a less critical issue than the cables and any ancillary bits and bobs.

I’ve never recabled a bike before, so I’d welcome advice on how and what to source for replacements would be welcome – assuming that it is possible at all. Some basic Googling suggests that “any 7-speed cabling” will do, but I feel that’s possibly a bit simplistic.

TIA.

If you don’t look after your bike, consider stainless steel cables.

My bike will be 19 this year and the bearings are starting to grind, the cables however, are stainless steel this time, since before they only lasted about 2 years of Japanese weather.

Whatever you use, I suggest you get a mate round to help you. From dim, distant memory, re-cabling the brakes is a fiddly job that works best if you have three or four hands.
