Complaint I’ve Received, Re: Sun Marketing

From a System Administrator friend; he’s right, corporate messaging sometimes becomes enthralled by the latest buzzphraseology, to an extent that leaves our installed base of geeks out there – and some internally – quite cold…

Alec

I know you know some of the more senior people in Sun UK. You might like to point out to them just how stupid some of their marketing mailshots are becoming? This one I got this morning proudly announces Sun doing stuff with “SOA”.

The only SOA I know of is the DNS Start-Of-Authority record… and I’m a long standing Sun customer…

This example of TLA (Three Letter Abbreviation) soup really means some one is so taken with their own hype that they have completely lost the plot and are posting out complete gibberish. They need serious administration of a big slap with a wet fish…

Regards, Bevis.

SUN SOA Open Day
Featuring a live demo of pragmatic SOA solutions that can transform your business

Sun Microsystems invite you to see a live demonstration of the Java Composite Application Platform Suite and presents how to deliver SOA based composite applications to transform your business.

There are many products and technologies available in the marketplace for an organisation wishing to invest in SOA. At first glance they probably all look the same and promise many benefits to the IT community and business user alike.

However, all SOA products are different and as a result, deliver differing levels of ROI. More importantly, how you architect the various elements of an SOA can have a huge impact on the likely success, ease of maintenance and business value that your organisation can expect from their choice of SOA tooling.

Whatever challenges you are faced with Sun believes that the only effective way to fully understand how your business can gain competitive advantage from composite applications and provide Return on Investment (ROI) is to see it yourself, so we have developed a Java CAPS Business Value Demonstration application. This will be run as a live demonstration and will form the basis of the seminar taking your through a number of ‘real life’ business scenarios.

Makes perfect sense to me. SOA in a Java environment is obviously referring to Service Oriented Architecture.

    ROI is Return On Investment.

    Don’t threaten *me* with a dead fish…

A fine punishment, fish-to-face, but Sun’s pretty gentle with marketing TLAs and don’t really deserve such; I get 6+ emails a day *much* worse than that, often from my current employer <grinds teeth>. We seem also to have ‘lost the source’ to some of the TLA/4LAs — which really doesn’t help get the message across 🙂

Since SOA seems to be in our futures, best enjoy it; go Google for soa+chuck+norris , to get things in perspective.

Surely you mean ETLAs and FETLAs rather than 4TLAs?

(ETLA == Extended Three Letter Acronym, FETLA == Further Extended Three Letter Acronym :-))

I must admit though that the Sun marketting mailshots are getting more and more meaning deficient and untargetted. After all, I work for a University, I have an .ac.uk address, so why do they think that my “business” would be interested in stuff which Universities don’t do, irrespective of their gobbledigook.

(Oh and don’t get me onto some of the impenetrable internal jargon used in the Sun GridEngine documentation.)

I know what SOA stands for, I don’t know what it means – but I do know that it always seems to me that it should be something more along the lines of Silicon-On-Aluminium. Also, ITYM XTLA since ?TLAs starting with ‘ex’ must start with X, by law.

in case you’d like something to read WRT this particular SOA:

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service-oriented_architecture

Then again, it could’ve been an incomplete abbreviation ..

    …so you’re implying Sun’s customers are ignorant?
