Buzzword Bullshit: Eigenvector

Everyone please do me a favour and add a comment to this posting when you hear “Eigenvector” used by someone who does not know what the word means. I did three years of Astrophysics, and I didn’t do it to let business-management folk get away with abusing my vocabulary:

Eigenvector

In linear algebra, the eigenvectors (from the German eigen meaning “inherent, characteristic”) of a linear operator are non-zero vectors which, when operated on by the operator, result in a scalar multiple of themselves. The scalar is then called the eigenvalue associated with the eigenvector.

…this could be almost as much fun as asking a Six-Sigma person what the root-mean-square of the deviations from the mean in a normally distributed function, is…

I’ve been hearing it a lot, too. Can it be blamed on some new Silicon Valley company whose algorithm for search included the concept, in its mathematical place, and then the same engineers joining the management team and bringing the concepts over, and then other managers in Silicon Valley picking it up. You cannot blame the Silicon Valley managers, who have most often had technical backgrounds.
However, I see your point about a beautiful concept getting dragged into all kinds of unseemly (non-eigen) directions (;-).
We should all go back to Mathematics. It’s much more beautiful and definitely more serene…and more divorced from this world…except when it’s made to tell a new story!

I’ve only ever heard it used in astrophysics lectures. I don’t spend a lot of time with managers any more, so I’m not up on the latest buzzwords. What do managers think it means? Could you have fun flinging other physics buzzwords around as if they were management speak? “We need to fourier tranform our mission to enable symmetry breaking within our customer base and decrease human resource quantum tunnelling”

Damn… You beat me to it.

I was at Sun’s CEC event in San Francisco, and so many of our execs have that word in their mouth that it is pathetic. At least half of them use it incorrectly. I was about to blog about this when your post appeared in my RSS reader.

Oh well… at least I know I’m not alone in thinking that! 🙂

nothing to stop you pointing to it.

that would be called a “campaign”.

Next time you hear someone say it, put on your best Inigo Montoya accent and say “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” (from the movie The Princess Bride)

I think the execs think it’s a point of view (aka vector) but because it’s got a German prefix, it sounds more important.
