So this happened:

… and to be frank the descriptive text:
This workshop-style panel will explain and demonstrate encryption to the public. It will include a deep dive into how the technologies work and participants will be shown how to secure their digital environment, what to expect when submitting information securely to third parties, and what strong encryption means. This will be followed by a debate between panellists on the merits and risks of encryption.
… should be considered no more than a placeholder; just as a discussion of the merits of the motorcar do not actually require us to recap the four-stroke internal combustion engine cycle, similarly it’s not really an impactful use of an hour to tell people for the Nth time what differentiates symmetric vs: asymmetric, what differentiates RSA vs: DH, and why it’s suddenly a bad idea to be investing in supersingular isogenies; but that’s okay; once the rest of the panel is onboard, we will have a discussion about changing it.
In a forum like this it’s much more relevant to explain what encryption does for people, how it is already almost everywhere, and why it needs to be moreso.
As for “what to expect when submitting information securely to third parties” — surely that’s in the remit of the ICO? 🙂
