An anonymous blog by a young woman in war-torn Iraq has been longlisted for BBC Four’s Samuel Johnson Prize for non-fiction. Baghdad Burning, a first-hand account written under the pseudonym Riverbend, is one of 19 books in contention.

    Thanks, Alec. I read Riverbend regularly; for some reason there’s no RSS feed, so I have to remember to check. She doesn’t post on any particular schedule, and when there’s a long gap it’s hard not to wonder if something has happened to her.

    I just re-read the first entry in my blog in which I quoted River – http geoffarnold.com/?p=66 – and find that two years ago she’s talking about the schools being closed because it’s too dangerous for the kids to go. Fast forward to today, and guess what? “Schools and colleges are on hold because…”. So much for progress.
