Green Transgenic Pigs

Being somewhat of the “just because we can do it doesn’t necessarily mean that we should do it” camp, I am mildly disconcerted by the following:

Scientists in Taiwan say they have bred three pigs that glow in the dark.

They claim that while other researchers have bred partly fluorescent pigs, theirs are the only pigs in the world which are green through and through.

The pigs are transgenic, created by adding genetic material from jellyfish into a normal pig embryo.

…and not only because of the obvious joke.

It’s not a stunt, it has a rational purpose, but my familiarity with the Internet Worm, plus the horrors of introduced/alien species in non-native environments (Rabbits in Australia, Rats and Cats in NZ, Japanese Knotweed everywhere) – it does make me worry what manner of whup-ass we are storing up for ourselves.

Mmmm… I have never read the ‘obvious joke’-book, but from the title I always assumed only the eggs were oddly coloured.
