Do you ever get the feeling that the planet is trying to remind us of something important?
Like maybe: the world is very big, and we are very small, fragile, and all human – irrespective of our political and religious leaders might (or might not) have us believe?
The biosphere is the scum of the Earth. 🙂
Seriously, though. We live on the continents, these are basically made of a scummy froth on the top of the mantal of the Earth caused by water alteration. The maximum depth of this layer is about 70km. The atmosphere extends a only about 30km high (ok, there is some which goes out a couple of hundred kilometres, but it’s tenuous even though satellites feel it). Now, if you realise that the distnce from the surface to the centre is about 6000km you can see how insignificant these layers are. Then if you put this into perspective with the size of the biggest thing humans have produced, it’s rather humbling.
If you also put into perspective the energies involved in the motion of the Earth’s interior and the the atmosphere, it puts single hydrogen bombs into the realm of the pin-prick.
