Twitter Updates for 2011-05-24

  • I'm sorry, caller on @BBCr4today, but the tabloids have nothing to do with the #superinjunction debate being "whipped up" on twitter. #
  • Caller on @BBCr4today – Nigel Tate? – all the whipping is due to innate prurience, and the violation of Gilmore's law http://bit.ly/QyETB #
  • @JackGavigan They love it, yes, but no Tabloid editor is behind (eg) the spartacus thing? They're not _driving_ it. #
  • @JackGavigan The self-propelled drive is down to the the law being an aged ass, and people wanting to prod it with a metaphorical stick. #
  • @JackGavigan I wouldn't argue with that; I would add that I think the press is rather scared they're irrelevant even as injunction-breakers #
  • A friend overheard me talking to someone & just accused me of using the phrase "Critical National Infrastructure" as a "chat-up line". wtf? #
  • @bensummers Having spent the entire evening with @glynwintle discussing CNI and holes in same, it's a bit hard to get off topic #
  • @KinkyNinja It's not flirting when it's what you do 😛 #
  • New: One of my favourite @zefrank quotes evar … http://bit.ly/l7dv1Z #
  • @e3i5 So Justice #Tugendhat #039;s measure of futility may be that newspapers don't publish, rather than "everybody knows"? I find that charming. #
  • @e3i5 If everyone promised not to buy a newspaper, maybe we could get past this? #
  • wind is blowing up a proper storm out there… #
  • A footballer was named on floor of house; now we watch the media sticking toes in the water as to who will first report this fully. #
  • The whole car-crash awfulness of the Commons right now is the belief that bulk media constitute the majority means of public communications #
  • Listening to #Radio4 PM – waiting for someone to say "Who Elected Twitter?" or similar? We've just had "Think of the Children!" #
  • Good heavens, that was Helena Kennedy #
  • @DavidAllenGreen Be fair – The Twittersphere is not being _driven_ by Murdoch/Hemming, they're being driven by prurience, some 75000 of them #
  • @DavidAllenGreen If you get stampeded to death by 75000 wildebeest it seems unfair to blame a couple of hyenas tht were trying to hunt a few #
  • RT @albertwhite: RT:
Garda on loudspeaker "no alcohol allowed"
    crowd of 3000+ "nooooooooooo"
Garda on loudspeaker "lads this is serious". #
  • PlayStation Network hack will cost Sony $170M
    http://bit.ly/m7EnpE # I think they missed a zero, or something #
  • New: The boundless irony of #Henning #039;s actions… http://bit.ly/jrYcSW #
  • @carlgardner Nice post. Could you plz present your evidence that Twitter users have been "persuaded [by the media] to flout" the injunction? #
  • @carlgardner (For context, I believe that correlation does not equate to causation, on this one.) #
  • @benjaminellis Consider a cubic table. Remove a rectalinear cubic portion from a midpoint of one vertice. Armchair. # pedantry vs triteness #
  • @VirtualAstro There are many possible answers, but a good one would be an update to the usual "What telescope do I buy" advice for punters #
  • @ramtopsrac "Free at last, free at last – Thank God Almighty, I am free at last" #
  • @VirtualAstro There used to be a really good website with "buy binoculars, OR DO NOT BUY FROM A CAMERA SHOP / DEPARTMENT STORE" advice #
  • @VirtualAstro Also a twitterlist of local astronomers would be cool. Something to break down barriers to communication. #
  • @ln4711 OSX and (I think) Truecrypt can both represent blockdevs as sequences of short files, so normal incrementals on a fileserver work OK #
  • @ramtopsrac No, that's your belief system dear. I worship Jean-Luc Picard. But it's an appropriate strapline for your "new vicar" article. #
  • Massive gym workout, followed by 35ml of 20yo 1978 Port Ellen @ 61% ABV, in 15ml water. Brandy snifter glass. Happiness. #
  • @ln4711 So you're not looking to back up the encrypted blockdev, but rather to keep the data safe, incrementaling from the plaintext side? #
  • @ramtopsrac Remember: Walk away from the light. #
  • @ramtopsgrum Ah, feckless youth… #
  • @His_Grace You keep asking that… #
  • @ln4711 something about yr suggestion just fused my brain; tell me more about your dm-crypt "volume" or blockdev – is it a huge file? #
  • Cloud is Scalable! http://nyti.ms/mMtity – not. #
  • @ln4711 I get that – in Solaris we used to call it "xlofi" – but what's the backing store? Raw partition or a file? #
  • @ln4711 You need custom code, I think; assuming you don't wanna mount/decrypt for backup youll need a tool which only copies modified blocks #
  • @ln4711 If fileserver has ZFS with deduplication you can just dump the raw device to get this, else hack something which diffs 8Mb blocks #
