What’s Up?

For reference by anyone who asks me in future:

Up: for any point, the vector of maximal increase of gravitational potential energy per unit distance.

I suppose that this could be rephrased as a differential, but I can’t be arsed since the above is actually quite comprehensible to normal people.

Old joke this. Steve Harper, the Who-obsessed mate of Mel, used to go around looking miserable until someone would ask “what’s up” so he could say “the direction of increasing gravitational potential” which is nearly the same thing.

Indeed so, hence why I thought I’d document it so that I can get it out of the way.

Next time I can just refer people to my weblog, which is what I do anyway, so nobody will spot the difference whilst giving me a twinge of sad humour.

A “stealth pun”, if you will.
