Voices, some calling Macron a Cameron-style fool for “handing France to the fascists,” others think him astute for forcing the issue, the centrists, & the left to pull their shit together at speed. Which is it?

A lesson from British politics is that if you let right-wing weirdoes present themselves as unrepresented victims then they can & will slowly grow their base¹ by engaging those who mindlessly hate all politics, or who want to stick up a finger at the establishment.

So in the wake of the European elections (which I suspect the French people view in the same laissez-faire manner that the British did²) is it not wise for Macron to “lance the boil” and force the French electorate to decide if they really want to be fascists?

Because merely hoping they will go away — permitting the right wing excessively steep like bad tea — can lead to unwelcome outcomes.

¹ Left-wing weirdoes are generally too busy infighting to pull this off
² e.g. the Brexit Party was represented there, but not in Westminster

  1. @alecm indeed, it is a strong and dangerous move but Macron also benefits from the Italian experience where the extreme right elected to government have discovered that the “old plan” of spending their time complaining about everything the government did no longer works when they are in government.

Discovering that you actually have no clue and that things are complicated once you get to the room with the buttons has been a bit of a surprise. So much that in local elections for mayors they lost several cities they had assumed they’d win (note: their solution? Change the electoral law to remove the ballot if no candidate has the absolute majority of votes as it traditionally favours the less extremist candidate…).
