Google & Apple keeping Reddit & X in app stores despite pornography due to revenue, [Australian] eSafety boss says

Wait until she finds out that you can also access Reddit & Twitter using something called a “web browser”

> The eSafety commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, told Senate estimates on Thursday that a French trial of age verification technology on global porn sites had “created so much friction that French users just went to sites like X Corp … or on Reddit because [it] has porn all over it”.

Asked what was being done to make app stores take action on apps with pornographic material, Inman Grant said the companies were not currently enforcing their own policies.

  1. @alecm The eSafety Commissioner and her office is a weird one – almost nobody apart from politicians and some random NGOs support it – most of the population here in Australia has literally no idea they exist nor cares about it, and the small minority who do know about them mostly oppose them, since you basically have to be interested in digital rights to realise they exist…

It's quite ridiculous that this position (an unelected bureaucrat) has a crazy amount of power but basically zero social license – it was just what we call a "thought bubble" (or maybe more aptly a "brain fart") of a conservative prime minister four PMs ago, and unfortunately the Act was expanded with more power under another conservative PM in the previous Government.

I'm not sure if the current Government has realised how stupid the eSafety Commissioner is making them look (having managed to make themselves and the Government look dumber than Elon Musk in the latest pointless stoush) but this Government has such a lack of courage because they're petrified of the media that they'd never do anything like shut it down for fear of being declared as being "against child safety" or some other nonsense.
