Brianna Ghey’s mother Esther calls for ban on social media apps for under-16s | ITV News

My god, the Conservative party right wing must be utterly drooling at the prospect of keeping teenagers entirely ignorant of political consciousness until they are 16+

Having read that article and a number of pages linked from it, for one, their reporting is much better than the Daily Mail’s.

    Definitely a very sad situation.

ITV still brought up the “red room” idea, but didn’t promote it as did the former. But did mention one of the killers watching Sweeney Todd ~ 9K times.* So do we ban Sweeney Todd? All horror flicks? I self-censor against scare/shock/horror stuff…always hated it. I have a relative who loves that stuff, I’ve babysat for kids who liked the genre…I just stayed out of the TV room with the youngest child who was OK with hanging out with me and not her siblings/friends. And yes I was told by the parent her kids and friends were going to watch xyz… I think it was one of those horrible chain saw massacre movies. Sick stuff.

Definitely a bummer and predictable solicitors look to scapegoat tor.

I don’t doubt adults use “social media” apps in place of real atom/rss feed apps, perhaps as a crutch since they don’t even know what atom/rss is, and preferring to be in the stream of what they think their “friends” are promoting**, but I’ve spent a lot of time with middle-teens and very, very few, are tuned into “political consciousness” as opposed to: who the current pop artist is, what the current shoe-style is, who’s top in sports, who is dating who, who has the best hair/nose/ears/eyes/makeup/bum/legs/boobs, their studies, and the like.

Parents definitely need to monitor & question their kids and what they do, offline and online. But the problem remains: some parents will hover too much, some will find a good balance, and some will not offer any advice or guidance over their child’s behaviour/interests. And many will pass through all those options. This is the scrum of life.

BTW – I loved your post about the milk being gone. ? Great reply!

*Working from memory since Tor Browser is being blocked now from reading their site. … Ok, got through, 9K it is.

**ahem, whatever algorithm the site feeds them.
