So: a chess nerd used SnapChat* group chat to joke amongst friends re: being a “Taliban Bomber” on a flight he was taking.
The tip-off, military intercept & arrest is being falsely attributed to “Gatwick’s Wi-Fi network” (HTTPS obscures data in transit) — it’s obviously a consequence of Snap’s reporting/partnering with law enforcement to prevent “abuse”, hence the fallacious press framing as Governments want to downplay “big brother” stories at the moment.
Remember, kids: if you’re not using a real E2EE messenger then your tasteless, edgy private jokes will get you into serious and expensive trouble.
Aditya Verma made the comment on Snapchat on his way to the island of Menorca with friends in July 2022. The message, sent before Mr Verma departed Gatwick airport, read: “On my way to blow up the plane (I’m a member of the Taliban).” […] A court in Madrid heard it was assumed the message triggered alarm bells after being picked up via Gatwick’s Wi-Fi network.
