Halley’s Comet reaches Perihelion, is on its way back | props to @JohnSimpsonNews

I saw the comet in 1986 – my first year of studying Astronomy at UCL – and although it wasn’t an a visual feast, it was amazing to be even passively observing something so rare and with such a tail and tale of historical importance.

It would be nice to see it again, but I, too, have to admit that the timing is unlikely to work. Cross fingers we’ll all be well enough to do so.

  1. @alecm My Halley’s Comet memory is that of huddling behind my dad’s pickup truck at Cape Spear, NL during a blustery North Atlantic winter evening. The wind chill was enough to cut through you but it was well worth the trip. Viewing was perfect for the once in a lifetime treat. Just turning 61 this week so I, too, won’t be around for the return visit methinks.

  2. @alecm I remember it well, thanks for the reminder. I had binoculars set up in a bedroom and myself and my wife watched it over a few days.
