HP still twitching?

From Dave Walker’s blog, elsewhere:

The UK quality press had quite a session of beating HP up in the immediately post-Carly days. In particular, The Times had an article in their business section on February 12th which not only described HP as an “ink company” (have they been listening to Scott, I wonder?), but also did an interesting piece of arithmetic which makes for a nice quote. Apparently, if you were to take an Olympic-size swimming pool and fill it with ink from HP inkjet cartridges instead of water, the cost of the exercise would be $5.9 billion. As The Times put it, “Dom Perignon is cheaper”.

Ink usage is insane when you actually do any reasonable amount of printing. I’ve been printing some of my photos and printing out large documents for my studies and having spent £75 on ink cartridges yesterday and last week, one of them is already down to 50% and the other at 80%! Sheesh. Anyone would think it was made from oil – hahahaha

This is one reason why I’m lothed to buy an inkjet printer and instead go for laser whenever it’s practical. OK, the initial outlay on a laser is a lot higher but the cartridges last a hell of a lot longer and cost less than the multiple ink cartridges of an inkjet.

However, it seems that HP have noticed this and seem to be putting chips on their toner cartridges. I wouldn’t put it past them to insert an expiry date in there somewhere (as Xerox do on their wax printer consumables).

Per Mr Usher’s comment on putting expiry dates on toner cartridges – when I was in the US last month, I heard from a colleague that HP recently have done precisely that on certain models. His cartridge still has ink in it, but his printer complains about it and won’t print with it.

Say goodbye to squeezy cartridge refills.
