• feline update

For those of you who’ve ben asking for information; one of my cats – Buster – has been bloated up with fluid inside his tummy cavity for several weeks now. He looks a bit like he’s swallowed an ostrich egg, but he’s soft and squishy like a water balloon. Occasionally, lain on his back when…

  • Skype On Solaris – Progress!

darrenm The Linux (static libqt build) of Skype 1.2.0.18 runs under BrandZ on OpenSolaris nicely. A previous attempt at running the current Linux build of 1.3.0.53 failed due to a missing libasound in the Centos 3.7 install I have. I had assume that this was a non starter since BrandZ only emulates OSS not ALSA.…

  • The Essence of Delegation

Referrred to be by Gene-Bob; judging by the image I think I’ll be reading a lot: Slow Leadership What prevents most people from becoming effective leaders? They believe that, if they have the authority to make an important decision, and must take direct responsibility for the outcome-especially if that choice proves to be a mistake-they…

  • Complaint I’ve Received, Re: Sun Marketing

From a System Administrator friend; he’s right, corporate messaging sometimes becomes enthralled by the latest buzzphraseology, to an extent that leaves our installed base of geeks out there – and some internally – quite cold… Alec I know you know some of the more senior people in Sun UK. You might like to point out…

  • Toys!

For years I have been on the hunt for the “perfect” motorcycling laptop; something robust with a small form factor with which to do blogging and photo processing whilst on the road. This might be it, so long as it can also run Solaris. (Via)

  • Leaflet recall after mule mix-up

BBC News Scotland’s fire services have scrapped hundreds of leaflets after a mistake urged members of the public to jump on a donkey when fleeing a house fire. The leaflet by the Scottish Executive for the eight fire and rescue services was aimed at Urdu readers. The advice was that anyone leaving a burning building…

  • ID Cards are dying…

…if they have to resort to this sort of tactic; people understand that Amazon and Ebay don’t need to know their customer’s identity beyond a certain, basic level (“does a transaction go through uncontested, is there a history of that happening?”) – so resorting to that as a bolster for ID cards will fail… Independent…

  • Poohstick Bridge QT Panorama

Long-term readers will know my appreciation of the game of Poohsticks; for complicated reasons I was doing a search on the topic, and encountered an incredible 360-degree QuickTime panorama of the “real” bridge, which especially if you have a Apple MightyMouse makes an extraordinary browsing experience. I’ve seen similar before, but this one is far…
