“I’m sure many list members designed and wrote their own compiled languages as children”
Only on certain maillists do you get this manner of comment: BCPL is interesting in that it is quite close to being a sort of generically unoriginal language. I’m sure many list members designed and wrote their own compiled languages as children. My experience (before I had met BCPL) was to come up with something…

ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS – EXCEPT EUROPA. ATTEMPT NO LANDINGS THERE.
Oops. The European Space Agency is to mount a billion-euro mission to Jupiter and its icy moons. The probe, called Juice, would be built in time for a launch in 2022, although it would be a further eight years before it reached the Jovian system. It will make a couple of close passes of Europa,…

An official investigation found large scale tax avoidance among senior bureaucrats, prompting the massive crackdown by Mr Alexander. In all, 2,000 senior public officials on more than…

“Do you know, Miall, Encyclopaedia Britannica doesn’t even mention spaghetti?” # and this is why we have #wikipedia
In de Jaeger’s 2000 obituary Ian Jacob, the then-Director-General of the BBC, was quoted as having said to Leonard Miall, Head of Television Talks 1954-61, “When I saw that item, I said to my wife, ‘I don’t think spaghetti grows on trees’, so we’d looked it up in Encyclopædia Britannica. Do you know, Miall, Encyclopædia…

Basic forensics / Why it sucks to lack Google Streetmap in Switzerland / Panorama Spaghetti Trees
Okay, this is a whim, but: Via my sister’s blog I found a video of the 1957 Panorama “Spaghetti Harvest”: And I thought: let’s find out where that was shot. The video references Switzerland and Lake Lugano, but of course that may be all fake; but an establishing shot clearly shows Pensione [Ri]storante Taddei –…

Thunderously deep boom over Hartley Wintney. Not thunder.
Not sure what it was, but it was like a Vulcan bomber on reheat, that deep.
