overhaul underway

I’ve not been blogging much of late; this has mostly – nah this has entirely – been due to pressure of work. It should improve over the next few days.

Last week I was pulling double shifts, by day prepping-for and having meetings with my boss’s boss and extended team; by night fighting with Skype for remote teleconferencing on three nights, and participating in an conference (until 2:15am ) on a fourth.

In other news: I am also looking to overhaul my web photo-albums; a considerable number of them have been archived to CDROM and deleted from the website, others will get redone from cleaned-up images in iPhoto.

I hope one benefit of this spring-cleaning-in-autumn will be to break some IMG-links inbound from other blogs, Lord help me, but I can’t quite fathom why it is that some people’s blog entries seem to consist entirely of hyperlinks to apparently-random images found on the web, with inane commentary, and my images are often targeted. Gee, thanks, Pagerank!

I may even take the opportunity to roll-out Gallery in which my friend and former colleague Bharat Mediratta has had some considerable hand, but regarding which I am still slightly dubious about what the net benefit would be.

Hmmm…

It’s possible to make images not get indexed by google and friends, and disallowing direct linking might help, too… though it very well might break some sensible use.

i have installed a robots.txt file, but i suspect that the issue is I am “conflicted” as americans say.

i suppose i could ban all referrers which were not (a) a search engine or (b) off my own website, but that does not square with my morals. what i *would* prefer to do is stop various little twerps from adding them to their own pages via IMG tags.

A labour-intensive way of doing it is by banning the twerps as they come…

You could actually script a good chunk of it… check referrer log, grab page, grep for words that indicate twerp-ness (or lack thereof) and add entries to .htaccess as needed.

(Best to use a scoring system, though things might become complex in doing so… then again, it seems that others run into the same issue so it’d be one that might get recyled elsewhere, too)
