wednesday

So I was in Slough yesterday, getting the motorbike’s 4000mi service, when these two beautiful Indian women walked into the shop, wearing full makeup, salwar kameez dresses and flowing scarves, strappy sandals, lots of gold jewelery and peals of bangles.

One then picked-up a broom, the other a mop, they systematically cleaned the floor of the motorcycle showroom, and walked-off elegantly, chatting with each other.

Perhaps I shouldn’t find this so surreal-seeming, but I do; even the mere idea of doing cleaning in such fine garb, astounds me.

If they were wearing salwar kameez they were probably Pakistani, but I get your point. Happens at work with us sometimes…….

I must admit I find it odd (through western eyes) when I see asian men in their ethic garb of a long shirt and loose trousers (I don’t know the official name) performing manual work, eg brick laying. I am just so used to that kind of work requiring jeans and t-shirt that it just seems wrong to do that kind of work in something that looks so smart/delicate.

Taking pride in your appereance is not something the British do these days. Unless leisure wear is something you can take pride in. 🙂

ja; indeed i know of women dressing up to a similarly careful extent for businesswear (around this office) risk being castigated by others of their sex – “attention-seeking”, “mutton dressed as lamb”, …

Not necessarily – the ‘salwar kameez’ is EXTREMELY common garb among Indian women – especially in the north and the west. In fact, I’d wager there are more Indian women who wear it than there are women in Pakistan :-).
