Damn, damn, damn…

The good news is that I am lighter than I thought I was.

The bad news is that my doctor just confirmed that the bump in the arch of my left foot is plantar fibromatosis, or put into plain English:

The big tendon which supports the arch of my left foot, and/or the sheath surrounding it, got damaged at one point and has healed; in healing it’s gone a bit overboard, formed a “nodule” and got inflamed. This may be benign, or a nuisance, or downright painful depending on your luck.

For me it’s an irritation, and gets swollen after being on my feet all day.

Treatment: for the moment, 4 weeks of anti-inflammatories (diclofenac) and properly supportive shoes; do not rest weight on the arch and do nothing that will stress it. Walking is fine, in proper shoes.

“Cycling?”

“No cycling for a month.”

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!!@!!!@!@

…which is a pain, because I really like cycling.

However, if the nodule is not significantly reduced within a month, or if it worsens, then they escalate the treatment to localised cortisone injections, and then possibly progress to surgery.

I call that an incentive to try and let it heal itself. Soooooooooo, that’s a month in comfy shoes, then?

Ouch! Hope it 1) Feels better soon and 2) heals w/o the need for surgery. Picturing you in nurses shoes….

  2. Eep! Hope it clears up..

Are they going to prescribe anything to reduce the affects of withdrawal from cycling ? 🙂

  3. My deepest sympathies.

Of course you could treat this as an opportunity to build up your right leg. I’m sure you could work out a way to ride your deckchair with just one leg.

Sorry to hear this mate – is it likely to have been a missed consequence of the big bike smash do you think?

If you’re going to wear ‘nurses shoes’ then the scaryer thought is of you in drag in nurses uniform!
