The Economist in audio

My weekly reading material goes MP3:

Dear Subscriber,

I am writing to let you know about a new weekly audio edition of The Economist, which will be free to subscribers. Each week, this live recorded edition will contain all articles published in that week’s Economist, including special reports.

The Economist will be available for download in full or by section. You can listen to the magazine on-the-go, while travelling, working out or at other times when it is more convenient to listen than to read.

I urge you to give it a try – the articles are produced in MP3 format and can be played on all major audio devices. Take advantage of your subscriber status and click the button below to register your interest. You’ll be able to download forthcoming audio editions totally free of charge.

The service will be launched during the next few weeks, once testing is complete. After you’ve registered your interest, we’ll send you an email announcing when The Economist is ready for downloading. We’ll include links and instructions to make the process as simple as picking up a copy of The Economist at your favourite newsstand.

Please note that the Economic and Financial Indicators section will not appear in the audio edition. Once you have signed up to receive the weekly audio newsletter you can request to stop the updates by logging in to the “My account” section on the site, or by clicking on the unsubscribe link in the email.

This is the best news from The Economist for a while. As someone who commutes a lot I have been chasing an audio version of the economist for weeks, every time I bought a new audio book! I actually emailed the economist, but never received an answer with regards to my question whether an audio format is available! Can’t wait – and will finally renew my subscription! Mac

Have you been able to try it out yet?

Do you find that you absorb it in the same way, now that you’re hearing it instead of reading it?

I usually find it incredibly frustrating to listen to audio versions of written content – I read fast enough that it just feels unbearably slow. That, and I tend to tune out quite often, so I end up having to rewind a lot. I find it interesting that even after 12 years of a job which revolved around having to pay very close attention to people’s speech (to the extent where newbies were firmly convinced that old hands were telepathic, as they couldn’t even catch what the old hands were hearing), I am still so very very strongly biased towards text input.

    Salute, Senor Igor

OK, so I was watching the BBC’s programme on word definitions, and it got me started on ‘quorate’ which led me you know where, which accidentally led me here. So, hi.

I’ve been listening to it and I think it’s great. I find it easier to focus on and to absorb. I listen to sections I don’t generally have time for in print. It’s beautifully read, in such a way as to bring out the point. It’s really great; can’t wait for the next one.
