  • Thread by @ciaranmartinoxf on end-to-end encryption

    2021/11/23 23:01:09 GMT

Unrolled So here, with trepidation, I've ventured into the end-to-end encryption debate with a lecture earlier this month, published by @BlavatnikSchool? & a summary article for @prospect_uk 1/15 https://www.bsg.ox.ac.uk/research/publications/end-end-encryption-fruitless-search-compromise The @prospect_uk article is here 2/15 https://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/science-and-technology/ex-security-chief-ciaran-martin-gchq-government-encryption-plans-facebook-apple Brief summary of a summary: there is ill-will on all sides rather than a focus on the reasonable objectives

This is a long Twitter thread which can be accessed by starting with this tweet and working backwards. Introduction David / @Elegant_Wallaby writes powerfully in favour of addressing child safety concerns regarding end-to-end encrypted environments — concerns which are rooted in zero, none, a complete lack of data, but the online safety community considers that

Some fragments worth saving, regarding defenders (proponents) of overblown online “think of the children” arguments to resist, delay, rethink, or backdoor deployment of end-to-end encryption… Part 1 [in context] — regarding “think of the children” On the other hand, this particular argument actually *is* being used to some extent as a pressure tactic to delay

  • The stupid thing about all the “Meta / Facebook Messenger Delaying End-to-End #Encryption” stories, is that… FB are not delaying it. The article misrepresents what was written. It is fake news, it worked, and we all got pwned. #e2ee #endtoendencryption

So it’s all over the information security and online safety spaces. And it’s wrong. Timeline: Part 1 Facebook’s Antigone Davis wrote this in the Telegraph — regrettably paywalled, but I obtained access in order to go have a look: We’re taking our time to get this right and we don’t plan to finish the global

I’m on Twitter, pointing out something which I consider to be so obvious as to be a truism: that a lot of our concerns about “online tracking” actually stand upon the behaviour of a bunch of code — and that rather than legislate and prosecute (etc) in order to regain privacy, we should instead simply

  • QUESTION: What crimes are easier to commit when there is no end-to-end encryption of messenger systems; and what opportunities are lost?

I was asked this question, and it’s a good one, speaking clearly to “what is the value proposition of robust end-to-end encryption that is worthy of the name?” I have written on an abstract level on this topic before, but my questioner is looking for a concrete checklist so I am hastily thrashing out some

It’s funny how nothing changes, really — except now the goal is to get the newspaper’s competitors to enumerate, identify & “protect” all their “new” media consumers. Because “safety” is a great cover story to obtain mass surveillance by via a morally irreproachable (?) back door.
