One thing which keeps me increasingly hopeful about AI technologies is my hazy but reasonable understanding of data compression. All those who dabble in cryptography at some point realise that it’s (literally, in the case of monoalphabetic substitution) a matter of trading one symbolic representation — or: encoding — of information for another. Sometimes those

  • Microsoft going big in Japan on AI Infrastructure

Elsewhere: “In Japan, copyright infringement will not be enforced on companies that use copyrighted materials to train generative AI models.” https://insights.manageengine.com/artificial-intelligence/the-us-should-look-at-japans-unique-approach-to-generative-ai-copyright-law/ And: “Unlike the UK and the EU, which allow the ingestion of copyrighted works only for non-commercial purposes, Japan allows it also for commercial use, purposes other than production and apparently including the ingestion

  • #Fedipact – The [mastodon] instances blocking Zuckerberg’s Threads.net

    2024/04/09 19:07:55 BST

It seems odd for progressive parts of the Fediverse to be celebrating inventing their own digital iron curtains: https://fedipact.veganism.social/ It (and the colour scheme) makes me wonder: are they keeping “bad” people & content out, or keeping their own users in? Not everybody thinks it’s a good idea nor desirable or accurate: https://atomicpoet.org/objects/1b2ddc6c-7e4e-417b-97d0-6eee8109b1ac

  • Every so often a Meta/Facebook “Classifier” burps and blocks some website and people scream CENSORSHIP — but it’s much more complex than that

    2024/04/07 20:57:47 BST

This is a topic that I keep having to re-explain every few years, so here’s previous attempt in a slightly different context, re: the story of how a “OH MY GOD IT’S CENSORSHIP” classifier-burp that blocked Tor led directly to Facebook’s “joining the dark web” … and indirectly to Facebook’s adding end-to-end encryption to Messenger:

    2024/04/06 18:15:55 BST

Both came out of the fridge at 3C but we feel that both deserve to be served a little warmer than that – the flavours and ease of drinking changed – smoothed out – after standing around for a while. The Dublin-brewed Guinness was lighter, easier to drink, with a sweet nose. Very “traditional”, better
