New word on the rise in the UK: “shonky”

2012/08/10 09:47:35 BST

As a Pratchett fan I’ve known about it for years and it seems to be in common use down-under, but “shonky” is on the uptick over here:

It’ll take more than one shonky film for me to lose faith in Pixar. Besides, the Dingwalls are in it.

The Counter opened serving excellent coffee on a shonky canal side deck that I have a feeling they nailed together from old palettes.

using a shonky internet system currently being run from a Spectrum ZX81 in Seb Coe’s back bedroom.

In a shonky, upstairs joint of about a dozen counter seats permanently populated by wordlessly slurping chaps, we ate wiry, fresh noodles in a niboshi broth

Software glitches in the wake of a major update aren’t unusual, and as Forbes notes, the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion similarly had a great many customers complaining about suddenly shonky battery performance.

In fact it could be that shonky has crossed the Rubicon into modern parlance.
