Also, the bites they take are apparently perfectly hemispherical.
I first heard of these many years ago, in a story involving Cold War era submarines (written pre “Red October”); the sharkes were the source of hemispherical holes which mysteriously appeared in the rubber coating around the sonar emitter dome on the protagonist’s sub. I think this is also the first time I saw mention of man-made noise disturbing sea life.
