conference spam

Am I the only person who receives weekly invitations to present at various IT-related conferences around the world, the suggestion being that I pay the sender lots of money for the privilege of doing so?

Are these mundane spam that everyone else also gets, or am I trancendentally standing upon some higher plane of spam?

I used to get them, but since changing jobs I appear to have slipped through their net.

No, it’s just another form of mundane spam. Nothing transcendental. All you have to have done is attend a couple of conferences where the attendee list was accessible/published. (Remember how that seemed like such a cool idea 5-10 years ago? Remember X-faces?) Or join a standards organization with lax controls on their mailing lists (like W3C).

My favourite recent announcement (5 copies received) was for a conference on “Ambient Intelligence”. Careful with that axe, Eugene….

the greatest nuisance to me is that i can’t wholly ignore these things, because they look similar enough to real conference invites that I occasionally receive.

Although the “Dear Dr Alec.” is generally a big hint of underlying spam-nature, even that is not guaranteed to mean it is spam…

You’re on a slightly higher pllane, dude.

I don’t get invitations to present, but I do get invitations to attend. Usually by snailmail.

Yup, I get a few of these every so often, mostly to present but a couple to attend.
