Cyberwar Amusement of the Day – in #ComputingUK

Quote: Opinion: There is no Geneva Convention online

Our electrical infrastructure is provided by several companies who are in competition with each other, so getting a consensus [to agree on how best to defend the electric companies against cyberattack] to help the nation as a whole is an interesting concept.

So you’re saying that they companies may have a vested interest in not sharing protection strategies in the hope that during a “cyberwar” the other company may come off worse?

And also you’re saying that all (in this case) electrical infrastructure companies have the same protection requirements and needs, so that a “consensus” is meaningful?

Or they’re saying that it would be better to have a single, homogenous defense strategy than heterogeneous approaches.

Time to dust off the old “Defense…”, sorry, “Defence in Depth” video.

    Have fun assaulting the castle!

Last I knew, they *do* share security strategies (at least here in the UK), as do providers of other utility services; quite simply, they know it makes sense.

That said, it’s another area where a product monoculture may be a Bad Thing; when new critical-service datacentres are commissioned with multiple independent power feeds, I wonder if the power companies are quizzed about their control systems?
