Competition: #Brompton Virtual Unfolding Race

NEW, “OFFICIAL” URL: http://bit.ly/BromptonFoldingRace

OK – this is an idea from me and @yaxu – provisional rules are as follows:

  1. Fold your Brompton bicycle completely (telescoping seat sections may be left folded for competition entry)

  2. Set up a video camera and start recording.

  3. Stand by the bike, with both hands on the saddle.

  4. Shout “Go!” and fully unfold the bike to a safe, rideable state (nuts tightened, seatpost locked, pedal out, etc)

  5. Optional: Shout “Stop!”

  6. Use the video to determine your unfolding time, try to get it to sub-second accuracy if you can, but no biggie if you’re not sure.

  7. Post the result to YouTube …

  8. … WITH tags “brompton” and “bvurace” (so people can find competition entries) …

  9. … AND do please put your elapsed time (from shout, to ready-to-ride) in the title.
    – eg: Brompton Unfolded 18.4 seconds

This is just for fun, so no cheating / fast-forwarding in iMovie; and if there’s a gap in the rules do apply common sense.

Feel free to add a comment below, if you want to share the link faster. I’ll post my entry this afternoon, even though I know I suck at unfolding.

UPDATE: changed the youtube tag to “bvurace” to save clashes with other words

UPDATE: OK, I’ve just done my first entry, not timed it perfectly yet but it appears to be 13 seconds.

Because of the cheapo Quicktime editing software I used, I timed from the first frame where my hands started to leave the seat, to the first “Sssss” of shouting “STOP” – and after the clock stopped, I bounce-tested the bike on camera to prove it was fully assembled.

This was literally my first attempt, so the method (and I) could use some refinement/practice.

Can you beat my time? I’ll do another one with more precise timing, later today – after some practice. 🙂

Search for other entries on YouTube using the tag ‘bvurace’!

  1. YouTube’s annotations editor is *terrible* for timing! Argh.

    Use Quicktime, iMovie, MSMM, etc

  2. The big time-win would be if I can speed up twizzling the locknuts, and especially if I can do both of them at the same time.

Hmmm… Tricky to learn, but not impossible…

  3. Greets… some tips —
set up the camera so that it shows front view, not, er, rear view.

Put on “Buglers’ Holiday” or the “Batman Theme”…

Extra points for trendy camera angles.

    Mine will be up shortly!
    cheers

    1. re: camera angle – a good point, well made; I’ll never make it as a fashion model. 🙂

Looking forwards to seeing your time.

Option for standardised sound track for brompton unfolding: “Yakety Sax” 😀

  5. Steve

Cool! My wife’s got a Brompton and thinks she can do it in 11 s. We shall see (I’ll comment with a link if we do it, my time will be measured in weeks …), she did comment that you’re the only other person she’s seen that flicks out both the front and rear wheels at the same time (and she’s been to the Brompton World Championships 🙂 )

  6. @Steve thanks!

Plz tell your wife I only seriously started doing the double-flick once I modded my Brompton to use the new rear suspension clip, makes it a lot easier to do the lift-and-twist-flick thing; that might contribute to fewer people doing it… ?

  7. By comparison, this is 26-ish seconds:

  8. This one is about 9.8 but not quite to competition rules; looks like 10 is the magic barrier to beat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3tgdlk8xlc

  10. Noted that yesterday the Brompton factory featured on the BBC News coverage of a certain election with a bike flicked out and in to top and tail the piece! (Noted 10pm news, BBC News Channel)

    Should we ‘Vote Brompton’?
