Taking advantage of late-night phone cheapness, i am downloading the supposed 4255 emails (probably closer to 8000) that have accrued on my old Dircon account since going ADSL. The return to modem usage is almost nostalgic, especially since the built-in one in the iBook works nicely, and with “smap” compiled as a SMTP receiver there is little overhead – downloads are flying much faster than they used to do in real life. Looks like I shall be getting about 1800/hour for the next few hours. It’s kinda sad – I am shutting down an e-mail address that I’ve had since 1994-ish, and which has been running on Linux from day 1, and on a sumtotal of two machines. My first ever self-owned dotted-quad. Probably doesn’t mean much to non-geeks, but it’s been a bit of history for me, what has occured on that IP address.
