adsl

i am still vastly amused by adsl, like someone who has got a motorcycle having previously had a pedalbike.

28 kilobytes/second upload. 58 kilobytes/second download.

now: that’s nothing compared to some of the hardware i have at my disposal at work – but it means i can work at home, no longer ph33r my phone bills, and no longer am forced to go into work when i have a desparate need for pulling any file of size >= 100Mb.

i can sit in my light, airy bedroom’s comfy chair, open the windows and listen to the birdsong, the wind clattering through the trees, and yet still connect through to work – even though i am uploading a file at the same time.

i can drink nice tea, and watch the cats, and do the same jobs that i do in the office.

cool.

if i’d had this ten years ago, it might have meant i could hold a relationship together – but that’s a long story, and probably best not overanalysed.

upload is a pain – if i could get 512/512 symmertric for trivial cost, i would. come to that, if i could get a 2Mbit line for trivial cost, i would.

but i can’t.

i am funding this out of my own pocket, and i’ve capped the same at about 30 quid per month as being a sane figure.

i suspect that ADSL stymies the chance of my getting a second phone line, but i shall have to ask BT what they can do about that.

sometime.
