Of course, if you’re a nasty person with access to a botnet merely farm out the cracking to the tens of thousands of zombies with big processors to do the job for you for less money and quicker.
You could then probably store the whole hash-space on disk these days and then you could then crack any password on the fly. (String a number of fully populated SATA StorageTek 6140s together and ZFS them.. should be enough space.) Job done!
